Reading Hands: The Winning Edge in Poker

The ability of reading hands may well be the most potent weapon any poker player can have.

Any player who has the expertise of reading hands can avoid most of the time the key pitfall of most poker players: playing a hand differently from the way it would have been played if they knew the hands of their opponents.

So if you somehow knew the value of your opponent's hand every time, it will be hard for you to lose since you will always play appropriately. Therefore, the better you are in reading the hands of your opponent, the closer you become in playing almost perfectly in poker since you can always maximize gains and minimize losses at will.

So how does one achieve this near perfect playing style through reading hands?

Well, there are numerous methods for reading hands in all of poker. The most common is analyzing the meaning of an opponent's check, bet, or raise and looking at his exposed cards in the case of open-handed games in order to judge from them the entirety of the opponent's hand. You then combine this analysis with your opponent's style of play to determine what his hand would likely be.

Using logic is also useful when reading hands. To do this, you keep note of your opponent's playing style in each round while you note the cards they catch each round in open-handed games. You accomplish both of these while focusing to the order in which your opponent plays them. You then put these bits of information together to deduce the likely value of your opponent's hand.

If you can't still pinpoint the likelihood of your opponent's hand after doing all of that were previously mentioned, you can then turn to mathematics to ascertain the likely values of your opponent's hand followed by deciding what kind of hand you will need to eventually prevail.

One important aspect of reading hands in poker is the process of calling and raising of bets. This aspect will figure importantly in your strategy specifically at situations like when someone bets and another player other than you calls. This is a precarious position as you must assume that either one of them has a legitimate hand. The same is true in the case of raising. When there is a raiser before you, you should have more than your minimum raising hand because your hand is more likely to be beaten.

Reading hands maybe one of the most effective strategies in poker as it makes you play correctly more often, but it also requires lots of practice and experience in playing poker as reading hands is not just about all of the presented methods here because more importantly, reading hands is about understanding poker and other players to the full extent.
